Configuration Control and Document Management Systems
Key words and phrases: configuration control, document management, technical specifications, revision control
Technical Specifications and Reference Manuals are often of a complex nature.
This type of documentation usually requires strict configuration and revision
control to ensure that all changes are rigorously controlled and to aid the
incorporation of the revision once they have been approved.
Revision control is especially important if other documents refer to, or are based on, the original documentation. Manual tracking of these revisions can be tedious, time-consuming but most importantly is prone to error.
Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions operates various change control systems for maintaining the configuration status of both software applications and documentation. The Company is actively involved in maintaining and managing the configuration control process for the UK tactical datalink technical reference documentation on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. The company also actively participates in the configuration control process for all NATO tactical datalink standards (including NATO Standardisation Agreements and Allied Data Publications).
Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions also has the capability to maintain documents under strict configuration and revision control using a sophisticated document management system called Quicksilver (formerly known as Interleaf).
Quicksilver performs the function of automatic revision tracking, expediting document review and update cycles while ensuring that all revisions are incorporated correctly, without errors. The revision tracking feature allows previous issues of the document to be viewed/printed enabling the history of issued (and draft) versions of the document to be established and interrogated.
